I feel as though I let Shirley Jackson down by not liking this, I didn’t even finish it. I thought she was one of my favourite authors, but I suppose this book just wasn’t for me. I found it hard to warm to Natalie although perhaps that was because I saw so many of my own early adult experiences in her.

Never mind. To quote a recent magazine article: just because you don’t finish a book, why do you feel you are not finished with it?

What a way to start the year book-wise! Oh my gosh this was extraordinary.  I haven’t become so enamoured with an author like this since Stephen King probably, and I worked my way through his books. I did that with a Robin Hobb trilogy, but that’s different.
I still miss Kay, Helen, Viv, such lovely characters and such a page-turner.

I finally read this! I didn’t think it would be very good at all, largely because of the way it’s described and how popular it is. I never seem to like very popular books… (I was worried it would be like the Patrick Ness), but I was so pleasantly surprised. It was addictive and highly visually evocative. I will definitely read the next one.
